Harbinger of Fire (2023)

Harbinger of Fire is a custom level that I made for a bullet-hell rhythm game called Project Arrhythmia (PA).

Design constraint: Due to program limitations, all visuals were created using just simple shapes (squares, circles, hexagons, etc.) and text elements.

Harbinger of Fire is a brutally difficult level that, according to the PA community, manages to “seamlessly balance both its gameplay elements along with the intense visuals.”

When making the level, I wanted to create a fiery gauntlet that tests the player’s skill and perseverance. I was inspired by a difficult bullet-hell game called Star of Providence.

My goal was to create something that stood out from the rest of my creations, as Harbinger of Fire isn’t my first level. To do that, I realized that my older levels focused too heavily on the visuals and weren’t very challenging or fun to play. In short, I needed to create something that was both pretty to the audience and enjoyable for the player.
